He Must Increase, I Must Decrease

August 21, 2013

It was my birthday yesterday, and I did up a little video message for you.

Text:

I’m 33 today…I’ve been making noise on this 3rd rock from the sun for 12,053 days.

Not sure about you, but the question I always think about at New Years and funerals and on my birthday is whether or not my 33 years have made an significant impact and how I can make a better impact in this coming year.

I’m not getting any younger, and if I live to be as old as my grandfather Snow, most of my life has already been lived. In fact, Jesus himself died at my age.

Which brings me to the main point that I’d like to make today on my birthday, so spare me a moment and hear me out.

The POINT is Jesus.

2000 years ago, he didn’t JUST give us some good teachings, he wasn’t JUST a pretty nice guy, he didn’t have JUST a few people follow him around…NO. He had so big an effect on history that our calendar centres around him, and more than a billion people today claim that he not only lived, and died, but rose back to life…for me…and for you.

The very son of God left heaven for earth, moved into our neighbourhood, and though he was the KING, humbled himself to serve and give and care for us in a way that no one else could. He loved us so much that he spent every ounce of oxygen he was given for us.

So, as I live, though I fail, stumble and make a mess in so many ways, it is my prayer that by God’s grace alone that Galatians 2:20 would ring out for everyone to hear, that “It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. The life I live, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me.” And like John the Baptizer in 3:30 of his gospel that the focus on me would decrease and by grace, my life would be an arrow pointing to Jesus.
