Converge Church – the name

September 10, 2010

It is important to recognize that not everything rides on the name of the church, but on the Name of Jesus Christ.

A friend of mine reminded me of that as we were brainstorming for the name of our church. And you know what? The whole naming a church thing is a very interesting task.

There were a ton of questions that kept coming up in my head. I mean, the church is something that is created, built up by, and identified in Jesus Christ. Not only that, but the church is a people, not a building, a flock of sheep, not a public service. Also, the local church that we are planting is an expression of the wider church body in Campbell River as well as an expression of the historic Church worldwide. So how do you give a name to something that is first of all, still in startup mode, and secondly, that has its identity in and is being shaped by the Creator of the universe?

In the end, when all the great ideas were floating around, Converge Church was the one that stood out to be the most pertinent to our message, our desires, our people and our culture.

First of all, Church is a part of our name because a “church” is what we are. Too many churches today are coming up with names that really are kind of confusing and they avoid the word “church”. Some give reasons saying that it is because they don’t actually want to be identified with the “church” and all its horrible history or with the weird cult “church” down the road. My thing with definitions is to use the words properly and properly define them. There are certain things that define a church, and my hope is that Converge Church will be one that is humble in the process, but will ever be purifying and maturing in its biblical expression.

The Converge part of the name is to more specifically define who we are and what we’re about. We want to be clear that we are a church that gathers. We gather in Gospel Communities throughout the week and all over the city for intentional community, teaching in the Word, for prayer, confession, repentance and fellowship. We also live life together doing birthday parties for our kids, BBQ’s, parties with each other, chopping firewood, surfing, walking, and just plain ol’ hangin’ out. But we gather because we are the church, not because of any particular program or because we have a building to go to. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ has transformed us and has reconciled (made peace between) us and God and has reconciled us as people to each other and given us common ground. So we “converge” at Jesus Christ through his Gospel which is central to everything we do.

That’s the name, and we constantly want to continually be pointing to Jesus in all we do, like John the Baptizer in John 3:30 – He must increase, I must decrease.

He must increase, I must decrease. John 3:30
