Church Planting is NOT a Competitive Sport

August 3, 2010

Those of you who’ve met me personally may find this amusing because of my Zacchaeus-like stature, but I actually played football in highschool. I can’t even tell you how much I enjoyed it. I loved the intense make-you-puke-training, loved the teamwork required to succeed and definitely loved the rush of adrenaline when I got the ball and broke a tackle to get a touchdown. Didn’t enjoy the broken fingers or the concussions, though, and those stories are for another time.

I’ve played other competitive sports where the point, really, is to win, not just to have fun trying. And though we’ve only begun this process of planting a church, there is one thing I need to be clear on at the outset: Church Planting is NOT a competitive sport.

I had the opportunity to ask a few questions to author of Church Planting is for Wimps, Mike McKinley, a couple months ago. This is what he said to me:

“The church is set up to proclaim the Gospel. Therefore, the spread of the church is the spread of the Gospel.”

What this means is that if we are in this for the Gospel, and we are, then we are in this together with other churches, not in competition with them. In fact, we’re on the same team!

If we’re in competition with and always trying to outdo another expression of the Body of Christ, then we are either on the wrong team, or playing the wrong game. Its not about that at all. Its all about Jesus.

I want to exhort you to join us together as a part of the larger Body of Christ in praying for the other churches in and around Campbell River. Although each church functions differently and looks different in their expression, if they preach Jesus Christ and him crucified, then we’re on the same team. Remember that.

Thanks for the timely exhortation. Just followed the book link earlier today and read from a couple good reviews, and it really put me in a frame of mind to better understand where you and Keely are at. Was down in the basement storage to get a James some blocks a few minutes ago and ended up praying for you guys in tears. Praying that God will raise up leaders around you to support you and minister with you and that as you bring the Gospel to CR it will simultaneously feed your own souls.

Great post Mark! My friend Jeremy shared it with me (he is a new/current Re:Train student). I look forward to following your blog and praying for you and your plant.

Great thoughts. There is book written by Esther Emmanuel; Should a christian be competitive? It is worth reading.
